Teide after dark is a different place from the one in the coach-window photos. You leave in the afternoon, watch the sunset from above the clouds and, once it is properly dark, your guide sets up long-range telescopes. Hotel transfers both ways are included.<\/p>\n
Pick-up from your hotel happens between 15:30 and 18:30<\/strong>, depending on where you are staying and what time the sun sets that day. The drive climbs through the island’s vegetation belts, from banana plantations to Canary pine, up to the level of the national park.<\/p>\n The first part of the evening is the sunset seen from above. At this altitude the clouds usually sit below you, so the sun sinks into a white layer rather than into the sea. Take your photos now, because later the phone camera gives up.<\/p>\n Once it is dark the astronomy begins. The tour is led by a Starlight certified guide<\/strong> who points out constellations, planets and the things you cannot see with the naked eye: star clusters and galaxies. Teide National Park has minimal light pollution and dry, clear air, which is exactly why astronomers built their observatories here.<\/p>\n For an extra fee you can add a picnic with snacks and drinks<\/strong>, in a meat or vegetarian version. If you skip it, bring your own food and water, because there is no shop up there.<\/p>\n It suits couples, anyone with an interest in astronomy, and families with children, but only from the age of 8<\/strong>. Younger children cannot join this tour.<\/p>\n One thing to know before booking: the tour is run in English and Spanish<\/strong>. The evening is also long and cold, so if you are after a quick two-hour activity, this is not it.<\/p>\n Transport covers the south of the island (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos) and the north, meaning Puerto de la Cruz. It does not cover the El Medano, Golf del Sur or Los Gigantes areas. If you are staying there, make your own way to a meeting point in Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje.
